VIDEO: Suspect fires shotgun at deputy

Around a 11:20 p.m. Wednesday, officers from the Gladstone Police Department initiated a traffic stop off of Oatfield Road in Gladstone. A few minutes into the stop Michael Newell sped away from the scene in the gold four door he was driving.

A short time later Clackamas County Sheriff deputies located the suspect driving near Webster road. Newell lead police on a short chase and crashed his vehicle near the intersection of Mabel and Merganser roads.

Upon exiting the vehicle Newell fired a round from a shotgun--fortunately only striking the police Charger. The front of the police Charger has several small holes from what is believed to be "bird shot".

Newell then fled on foot into an area densely covered in black berry bushes. Several patrol units surrounded the area. As the suspect was believed to be armed, Clackamas County SWAT was activated and responded to the area. Police units from Oregon State Police, Oregon City Police Department, and Milwaukie Police department also responded to assist.

The Portland Police Bureau sent a fixed wing aircraft with a FLIR heat detecting camera to the area. The plane was quickly able to locate the suspect and communicate his location to the ground units.

At about 3:45 a.m. deputies were able to take Newell into custody with the help of a K-9 unit. Newell sustained minor injuries and is being treated by a doctor.

Newell had outstanding felony warrants out of Yamhill County for Assault in the second degree and a parole violation warrant from the Oregon State Parole Board
