Hiker dies in fall at Angel's Rest

Hiker dies in fall at Angel's Rest

A caller to 911 reported a hiker she was with had fallen from a rock near the top of Angel's Rest, in the Columbia River Gorge, where they had been sitting.

She could not see where he had fallen, because of the thick brush covering the ground and he was not responding to her when she called out to him.

A Corbett Fire Department team along with AMR responded up from the Angel's Rest trailhead on the call.

Another hiker passing through the area stopped and was able to make his way down from the trail to the hiker that had fallen and reported the male was unresponsive and he could not detect a pulse.

Corbett Fire Department personnel arriving at the top of Angel's Rest rappelled down to the fallen hiker and confirmed the hiker was deceased.  He's identified as 29-year-old Michael Cigler of Hillsboro.

Preliminary indications are Cigler appeared to have fallen approximately 75 feet down off the trail and then travelled another thirty to forty feet before he came to a stop on the hill.

Alcohol may have been a contributing factor.
